Rodeo Art....Fauvist Farm Animals Kinder and 1st grade

Anyone within 50 miles of Houston, TX participates in Rodeo Art....here is my take on it this year.

My Kinder and 1st graders studied Franz Marc and learned about realistic vs. expressionistic colors.  They got to choose which kind of colors to use on their animals.  Kindergarten did pigs and 1st grade did chickens and roosters.

For the first class, we looked at paintings by Franz Marc, read The Artist Who Painted a Blue Horse by Eric Carle and students practiced sketching their animals in their sketchbooks. I had tons of pictures of the animals for the students to look at and I drew a few samples on the board.  Some students are happy to draw on their own but some students need a "draw-a-long" to boos their confidence.  For the second class, students sketched their animal LARGE on watercolor paper and added color with oil pastel (this was when they had to pick realistic OR expressionistic colors).  For the last class, we practiced wet-on-wet and wet-on-dry watercolor techniques then students painted their animals.  Kindergarten(pigs) used pan watercolors and 1st grade (chickens/roosters) used liquid watercolors---what a difference!

Thank you Deep Space Sparkle for the chicken drawing aids!
