Society for the Performing Arts, Houston .....The Spirit of Cultural Celebration winners

Each year, the Houston Society for the Performing Arts hosts an annual art competition.  This was our first year to participate but I really liked this contest because it supported the benchmarks and standards of my school.  The subject matter was almost unlimited and it was meaningful in a personal way to all students.

For this assignment, students had TOTAL choice of subject and media...which was an interesting experience for me.   In the fall they researched their cultural heritage with their parents, made a family tree and turned in a poster about their cultural heritage. The images on the posters were used a visual aids for student artwork.  Our artist for inspiration was Diego Rivera and his murals about Mexican culture and history.  After students finished their art work, I hung it in our Commons and every student brought in a food representing their heritage to share with their class.  It was a great school-wide Project Based learning  experience.

I used many resources from Scholastic's The Heritage Project for ideas and print-outs.  Thank you Scholastics!
